Georgia: The Director of the Georgian Maritime Transport Agency met with representatives of the maritime field and sailors on Monday, September 29, 2025. Notably, the meeting was attended by Sulkhan Tamazashvili, Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.
The Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia shared the glimpses of the meeting on its Official Facebook Page on September 29, 2025. The Agency also shared a small note about the discussions held at the meeting, along with its glimpses.
According to the note shared by the Maritime Agency of Georgia, it should be noted that during the meeting, Ivane Abashidze presented the draft changes to the Georgian law on “Education and Certification of Sailors”.
The changes to the above-mentioned law will apply to those who have been qualified as a marine medium vocational and/or diploma specialist before 2017, but their certification does not comply with the requirements set forth by the current law. According to the change, the agency will be authorized to renew or issue new certificates of competence.
As a result, up to 800 sailors will be allowed to obtain or renew a driving or operation level competence certificate.
The changes will also include the development and implementation of the certification standards for ship electrical technician and training programme, which will contribute to the development of human resources in accordance with international standards, particularly for those who hold a higher or vocational degree in electrical engineering, electronics, or welding but do not have a maritime profile S education.
During the meeting, the director of the agency also presented other issues related to the certification of sailors and working conditions, which will contribute to the development of qualified personnel, the protection of labor rights, and the creation of a safe working environment for Georgian sailors.
The meeting was also attended by the First Deputy Director, Malkhaz Gogitidze, and Deputy Natia Miminoshvili.
