Sagarejo Tragedy leaves Georgia in shock

Tbilisi: In a shocking incident, a 49-year-old man opened fire on his neighbours, leaving behind five dead in Sagarejo, and about five people got different body injuries. After the horrendous shooting, the accused shot himself as well. As per the reports from the Interior Ministry of Georgia, the accused was an ex-member of the Georgian Armed Forces from 2006-2021 who has served in Afghanistan as well.

Tbilisi: In a shocking incident, a 49-year-old man opened fire on his neighbours, leaving behind five dead in Sagarejo, and about five people got different body injuries. After the horrendous shooting, the accused shot himself as well. As per the reports from the Interior Ministry of Georgia, the accused was an ex-member of the Georgian Armed Forces from 2006-2021 who has served in Afghanistan as well.  

According to the primary information, several gunshots were fired by a citizen from the balcony of one of the apartments, which resulted in the death and wounding of several people in the yard of the building. However, the motive for the shooting could not be discovered in the primary investigations.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs mobilized employees of relevant divisions to carry out the investigations. Additional police teams were mobilized at the scene, and special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were also called to the scene; upon arriving, the accused probably committed suicide by firing a firearm Yella. 

Further investigation is underway under Article 109 “L” and Article 236 of the Criminal Code into deliberate murder committed in aggravated circumstances and illegal purchase-keeping and carrying of firearms and combat material.

One of the five casualties of the incident was the Senior Detective of the Kakheti Police Department, Senior Lieutenant of the Police, named Otar Ghvinashvili. The Ministry of Internal Affairs expressed deep sorrow over the death of the police official, who died while performing his duty.

The attacker opened fire on the police from one of the apartments. As a result of the wounds sustained, Senior Lieutenant of Police Otar Ghvinashvili died. 

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has extended deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this heinous act.
