Georgia’s Agriculture Sector Undergoes Major Transformation

Georgia’s agriculture sector has undergone a remarkable transformation and development in the last decade. Shalva Papuashvili, a Member of the Georgian parliament, appreciated the efforts of the government, parliament, farmers, and international partners.

With 40% of the population still living in rural areas, agriculture and rural development are among the top priorities of the country.

Agriculture plays a significant role in developing the economy and increasing social welfare. According to a World Bank report, Georgia’s agriculture, water, and land can increase economic productivity, including a transition from low agriculture returns to high-value crop production, if supported by targeted policies and complementary public and private investments.

Parliament has taken several steps to create an appropriate legislative basis for agriculture and rural development, including closer to the EU. An OECD report recommends introducing a specific objective and activities relating to investment promotion and facilitation within the new Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy of Georgia 2021-2027 and the Action Plan for 2021-2023.

It also suggests providing a transparent and predictable framework for prospective investors to submit investment plans and obtain government approvals to acquire agricultural land.

Georgian Agriculture: Transformation and Development Trends of the Last Decade” is an exciting document that analyzes and gathers agricultural achievements of the last decade. It highlights the progress made in improving the quality and safety of food products, enhancing the competitiveness and export potential of the sector, and promoting sustainable and climate-resilient practices.

The document also acknowledges the challenges and opportunities the sector faces, such as the need to improve access to finance, markets, and innovation and to address the fragmentation and low productivity of small-scale farms.

The government, parliament, and other stakeholders have expressed gratitude to everyone for their active, dignified and long-term work in this field. They have also reaffirmed their commitment to continue supporting the development of the agriculture sector and the well-being of the rural population.
