A Georgian delegation is currently on the official visit to Georgia. This is a foreign relations committee of the Parliament of Georgia. Nikoloz Samkharadze chairman of the committee leading the delegation.
The Georgian delegation during the visit met with Damon Wilson, the president of the US National Endowment for Democracy(NGO), and Kenneth Volak, the chairman of the endowment.
It is to be specifically mentioned that at the meeting both the parties discussed the security challenges in the Caucasus region. The issue of Russia’s occupation of Georgian territories was the main issue of discussion along with the issues of US-Georgia relations, the 2024 parliamentary elections in Georgia, and the pre-election environment. Parties also discussed the the draft law on “transparency of foreign influence” which is being opposed by many political parties. Wide-scale protest rallies are being organised in many parts of Georgia including the capital city of Tbilisi.
The USA representative during this meeting congratulated Georgia for grant of candidate status granted by the European Council. The further attention of bilateral talks was focused on the process of Georgia’s integration into the European Union. They also discussed the importance of starting negotiations with the European Union to get full-fledged membership.
The visiting delegation of Georgia to the USA included the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee Nikoloz Samkharadze, along with the Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee Davit Zilfimiani. They were accompanied by a member of the Foreign Relations Committee Ramaz Nikolaishvili.
Notably both countries shared strong bilateral relations dating back to many decades. The various agencies of the USA are in Georgia to provide training on the English language and training on military professionalism through the IMET, the military education and training program.
Georgia since the 2000 aspiring to be a member of NATO, However, the decision in this regard is still delayed due to strong opposition from regional players like Russia.
