The Georgian Government declared January 9 as a day of mourning in Georgia to honor the memory of those who died in the fire, in the occupied Abkhazia territory, in the village of Saberio of Gali district.

The Georgian Government declared January 9 as a day of mourning in Georgia to honor the memory of those who died in the fire, in the occupied Abkhazia territory, in the village of Saberio of Gali district.

On January 5, 2025, five children were killed by a fire in a house in the village of Saberio of Gali district, temporarily occupied Abkhazia.

The Georgian government decided to lower state flags in several locations in honor of the Day of Mourning:

  • On the buildings of the administrative and defense forces of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia,
  • In all military subdivisions
  • On the Ministry of Justice of Georgia
  • On the administrative building of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia
  • Martvili Municipality
  • Kvareli Municipality

Martville Township Hall is mourning over the tragedy, sending condolences to the families and loved ones of the children who died in the fire.

The Ministry of Justice expresses its deep sorrow over the tragedy and sends its condolences to the family members of the deceased.

The Georgian Citizens appreciated the actions of the government. Despite the fact that the citizens are very sad and shocked, still, they still praise the government for their efforts in confronting the families of the children who died in the Abhkazia fire tragedy

About the Fire Incident in Gali Administration

A fire broke out in a private house in the village of Saberio, in Gali District, in Abkhazia, which resulted in the deaths of five children. The tragic incident occurred on January 5, 2024, early morning.

During the investigation, the reports found that at the time of the fire, the parents of the children were not at home. The children’s grandmother was trying to light a stove using gasoline, which resulted in an uncontrollable fire in the house.

Emergency services were unable to reach the scene in time to extinguish the fire. The children, the eldest of whom was 8 years old and the youngest just 1 year old, died at the scene. The injured grandmother has been transported to a hospital in Gali for treatment.

Reports also found that the house belonged to the Cholaria family.
