Georgian National Olympic Committee mourns loss of Soso Jachvliani

Soso Jachvliani, a famous Georgian actor, film director, former Member of Parliament, and President of the National Arm Wrestling Federation of Georgia, passed away at 65 on February 8, 2024. He was fighting a severe illness for a long time.

The Georgian National Olympic Committee (GNOC) expressed its deep sorrow over the death of Jachvliani, a veteran athlete and a sports organizer. The GNOC also conveyed condolences to his family, relatives, and the Georgian nation.

Jachvliani was a dignified person, a renowned artist, an accomplished athlete, and a public activist highly respected by the Georgian community. He was most famous for his unforgettable performance in the film “The Wishing Tree”, considered a classic of Georgian cinema. He also directed, wrote, and produced several films, such as “The Last Day of the War”, “The Last Bullet”, and “The Last Hero”.

Jachvliani was also a world and European arm wrestling champion and the president of the Georgian Arm Wrestling Federation. He was a Member of Parliament from 2012 to 2016. He served as the deputy chairman of the Sports and Youth Affairs Committee, the deputy chairman of the Georgian Dream faction, and a member of the Defense and Security Committee.

Jachvliani had a close, friendly relationship with the staff of the GNOC and often visited them. His strength of character appeared especially when he faced a health problem; he did not lose his optimism or have a complicated feeling. He was communicating on the phone and encouraging his friends, comforting them here, “I’m not going to give up; everything will be fine.” Unfortunately, it did not happen; Soso Jachvliani moved to heavenly Georgia and left us with great pain and sadness.

The GNOC said that Jachvliani’s death was a massive loss for the Georgian culture, sports, and society. He will always be remembered as a symbol of the Georgian natural heritage.
