Tbilisi: Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia hopes that bilateral relations between Georgia and the United States of America will improve. He said Donald Trump’s victory has great potential to bring significant change in mutual relations.

PM in a brief interview with Georgia’s public broadcaster, said that the postures of the newly elected president indicate that the USA’s approach will be positive toward Georgia in the future. In the same interview, he said that Trump’s victory will have a positive impact.

The new approach of the USA administration can play a significant role in bringing peace to the Eastern European region. This peace will also reduce international pressure on the countries located in Eastern Europe including Georgia.

In his address to the media he also revealed that pressure on the country would be eased if the Russia-Georgia conflicts came to an end. This would also give a new boost to Georgia-USA bilateral relations.

It is worth noting that although the relations between Georgia and the United States of America are very cordial, the adoption of the Foreign Agents Law created a rift in bilateral relations which required serious efforts from both sides.

In the past both countries have worked closely with  to promote mutual security, counterterrorism measures etc. The United States of America, in a significant move recognized the independence of the Republic of Georgia on December 25, 1991.

Later in 1992, to better facilitate foreign relations, the United States of America established its Embassy in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia. There was a sharp criticism from the United States of American administration towards the implementation of foreign agents law in Georgia. The US administration announced a review of its bilateral relationship with Georgia.

The Foreign Agents Law was introduced by the Ruling Regime, “Georgian Dream” to bring transparency to the workings of the Foreign Agents Law. However, many opposition parties opposed this.

Similarly NGOs and CSOs also alleged that a law had been introduced to stifle independent media voices. They demanded that the law be repealed with immediate effect.
