Tbilisi: As 31 years has passed since the Sokhumi massacre, Georgians remember those who lost their lives in conflict. The country is commemorating the 31st anniversary of the war.
The anniversary is observed by holding wide-scale events in the Georgia. Government officials and representatives also paid tribute on this occasion.The Georgian national flag was lowered to half as a gesture of respect.
The defence ministry specifically initiated this and lowered national flags on all defence agencies’ buildings and military installations. At the same time the central administration also issued a statement to pay tribute and announced the lowering of the national flags. This day is often remembered as a national mourning day.
Meanwhile a member of the ruling party Georgian Dream along with a candidate for the Zugdidi delegation and Nino Tsilosani, one of the majority leaders attended the other people at Rukhi village. Here they all remembered the departed souls as well.
Kodua while speaking on this occasion underlined the significance of the day and added “Although 31 years have passed since the tragedy, it still gives pain. However, we should join hands to fight the anti-national forces. It is also important for all of us to extend an olive branch to members of the Abkhazian community.”
He further added, We are always ready to support our brothers and sisters from Abkhazian brethren for a better future. This is also important due to the historical bond we shared with these people of Abkhazian.
On the other hand Tsilosani also spoke about how we can make efforts for the peaceful development of all communities living in different regions of the country. The war in the region of Abkhazia started in August and lasted 13 months and 13 days.
The region fall in hand of enemy in September 1993. The conflict caused massive damage to human lives and property. Moreover this also caused large-scale displacement of people as their houses were severely damaged.
