Tbilisi, Georgia: The first ever climbing route in Georgia’s protected areas, “Via Ferrata” will be developed in the territory of Birtvisi Canyon. This eco-tourism initiative aims to promote adventure tourism while preserving the natural landscape, offering visitors a new and exciting way to explore the country’s unique terrain.
The Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia shared the details of this new initiative through its official Facebook Page on June 30, 2025, Monday. According to the details provided by the Agency, it should be noted that Via Ferrata, also known as “Rail Path“, is a special rock-mounted infrastructure comprising iron stairs, trusses, and small platforms to ensure safe movement in rocky areas.
The unique rocky relief and landscape of Birtvisi Canyon create ideal conditions for setting up the Via Ferrata Trail – while Birtvisi Canyon previously attracted mainly hiking lovers, the new infrastructure will allow nature and hard feelings lovers to easily travel safely and discover the unique natural monuments with special equipment.
It is noted that active work on the development of recreational infrastructure on Birtvisi Canyon is underway – a visitor center, a toll platform, and cottages are being built; 3 suspension bridges, a swing, and a zipline are being built.
