The Tbilisi State Conservatory announced that Giorgi Shaverzashvili will be the new rector of the Conservatory. Shaverzashvili’s appointment comes after Nana Sharikadze whose term expired on October 21.
According to Georgian legislation, after the term of the Rector of the Conservatory, Mrs. Nana Sharikadze who left her post, the Conservatory was obliged to announce a competition for the election of the acting rector and chose the acting rector for 14 days starting from October 21.
Mr. Giorgi Shaverzashvili has been working in Tbilisi State Conservatory, for several decades. He is a professor at the Faculty of Composition and Musicology, and also a member of the academic and dissertation boards, thus well informed about the current state and needs of the conservatory.
The Ministry of Culture congratulates Mr. George on his success. He expresses his confidence and hopes that during the transitional period, the management of the university will be implemented in accordance with the best interests of the conservatory and the educational process.
As it is known to the public, its leadership failed to elect a new rector, as the Conservatives chose the Ministry, as a way of confrontation with the executive branch of state control over Conservatives’ activities, which ended in the Conservatives’ defeat in court.
Giorgi Shaverzashvili
Giorgi Shaverzashvili is known as the professor of composition. He graduated from Tbilisi State Conservatoire with two majors: piano 1973 and composition 1984. Laureate of piano competition Baku, Azerbaijan (1972), Composers Competition, Moscow, Russia (1985). Since 2017 he is holding the position of Chairman of Composers’ Union of Georgia.
He is also active in other positions. As a pianist, he has performed contemporary music and his own music. He has served as chair of the Georgian Composers Union since 2017.
He has taught composition at the Conservatory of Music in Tbilisi since 1990, where he has been a professor since 2017. In addition to the works listed below, he has composed music for films and stage productions.
