Tbilisi: Although Georgia has adopted the foreign agent’s law (Russian Law) it is still being criticized by all. Now once again the International Journalism Association has condemned Russian law.
It is to be mentioned explicitly that just a day ago on August 5 officials of the National Press Club as well as from the National Press Club Journalism Institute came forward to oppose the law.
These organizations were joined by many other press freedom advocacy organizations worldwide. All of the abovementioned groups have issued a joint statement. The statement expresses solidarity with their colleagues in Georgia in the field of Journalism.
The statement reads thatv in the name of foreign fundingv this is a direct attack on the freedom of the press. The Government wants to stifle independent media voices. As per the statement, journalismv in any sensev is not a crime. At the same timev supporting Georgian counterparts from other parts of the world is also not an offense.
The global journalism leaders while focusing on the gravity of the issue said that ” any act against independent journalism in any part of the world is a threat to journalism across the globe.
Statements further added that independent journalism is the need of time and for the same reason we are extending our support to the Georgian counterpart.
The organizations further states that putting pressure on these media houses with court cases is also unacceptable and we must stand against this. They further expressed concern that there were at least 20 reporters who were injured in attacks this year.
The represtnaive of the media houses further added that there are general concerns about the comminty. The people from countries with freedom of the press can understand how the pressure on media can damage society at large.
The Journalists also played a good role in the country. They raise the voices of people who are socially backward and are not financially strong. All countries in the world should recognize the role of independent media.
