The Chairman of the US Helsinki Commission, Senator Ben Cardin, as well as Co-Chairman Congressman Steve Cohen, Commission ranking members Sen. Roger F. Wicker and Congressman Joe Wilson, praised the Georgian government’s “strong” support for Ukraine on Tuesday.

The assessment is part of a joint statement released by US officials on the efforts of US allies and partners in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The Senators and Congressmen express gratitude to Georgia for its co-sponsoring of the United Nations General Assembly resolution on the aggression against Ukraine and for the country’s participation in the International Criminal Court’s investigation into war crimes committed in Ukraine on the backdrop of the Russian invasion.

In a tweet, Helsinki Commission wrote with an attached photo and link, ” @HelsinkiComm leaders @SenatorCardin, @RepCohen, @SenatorWicker, and @RepJoeWilson recognize key contributions from allies and partners; welcome efforts supporting #Ukraine from

@OSCE participating States #Turkey, #Moldova, and #Georgia:

Moreover, on March 3, Georgia has joined 140 other countries in voting for a UN General Assembly resolution by condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The resolution demands that the Russian Federation “immediately, completely and unconditionally” withdraw all of its militaries from the Ukrainian territories “within its internationally recognized borders.”

The authors of the statement particularly noted Georgia’s efforts in the face of “Russian threats” and the continuing occupation of Georgian territories by the country and welcomed recent statements by the President of Georgia and its Government in support of Ukraine.

The officials of the US also congratulated Georgia on its formal application for European Union membership. They expressed readiness “to reinvigorate bilateral partnership and deepening transatlantic bond” between the US and Georgia. Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia, signed the nation’s bid for EU membership on March 3, saying “applying for EU membership marked the next important stage on Georgia’s European integration path.”

The US Helsinki Commission’s statement also mentions the Baltic Sea states and Poland, Romania, Turkey, and Moldova’s efforts in reaction to Russian aggression.
