Georgia: Irakli Lekvinadze, Chairman of the Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency (GCCA), presented a complete report on the Agency’s consumer protection activities during a joint session of the EU Integration Committee and the Sector Economy and Economic Policy Committee of the Parliament of Georgia.
The Georgian Competition and Consumer Protection Agency (GCCA) shared glimpses of the joint session on its Official Facebook page on March 28, 2025, Friday. GCCA also shared a small note along with the snippets of the session.
According to the information shared by the consumer agency, it should be noted that the session was attended by members of the Parliament of Georgia, GCCA staff, representatives of regulatory bodies, and sector experts.
According to the Consumer Agency’s note, it should be added that during his speech, the Chairman of the GCCA Irakli Lekvinadze spoke in detail about the reforms of consumer rights protection, results achieved, standards set by the Agency for consumer interests, challenges, and plans for 2022-2025. “On November 1, 2022, the agency “Consumer Rights Protection” began enforcing the Georgian law.
Notably, in the year 2024 compared to the year 2023. In January-February 2025, the number of applications will be 60% higher than the previous year’s analogous.
According to statistical data for 2022-2025, more than 90% of cases were resolved in favor of consumers and they were unpaid up to a million Gel. During the accounting period, generally, the claim is fixed on repairing or returning a defective item. Online shopping accounts for 70% and on-site purchases 30%. According to the ranking, Tbilisi is leading at 83%, followed by Adjara region at 5% and Imereti at 4%.
It is worth noting that the committee hearing also addressed the Agency’s international cooperation activities. Notably, two years after the implementation of the consumer protection legislation, one of the GCCA’s cases was recognized as the best among 40 countries by the World Bank Group, earning the Agency an award.
