Shida-Kartli: As part of a series of workshops, a media literacy workshop was held in the Shida-Kartli region’s Gori Municipality with  the support of a non-governmental organization, “People in Need in  Georgia.”

A large number of teachers from private and public schools attended the workshop. The workshops are being held in different parts of Georgia.

The workshop theme was “Media Literacy-digital Skill in School Education.” Mrs Teona Robakidze, a representative of the Czech Embassy in Georgia  also attended the event.  The significant meeting was held in an interactive format. At the same time the event’s audience watched Nicholas Veley’s film “Write Out”. There was also a discussion after the end of the movie.

Theona Furtsvanidze, the manager of the Media Literacy Project addressed the attendees and introduced them to the various aspects of the OWIS (One World in Schools) methodology. She also shared online learning resources like manuals and documentaries with them.

It is worth noting that the project “Media Literacy for a Democratic and Sustainable Society” is being implemented in Georgia with the active support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

Moreover the project   has partnership support from Radio Marneuli 96.9 FM. The event was  marked by the screening of a dedicated presentation to apprise the participants about the different methods of implementing the OWIS in schools and other educational institutions.

The media literacy workshop also aims to help teachers teach their students about independent media. The workshop gained importance against the backdrop of the controversy that erupted over adopting the foreign agent law.  The law initially vetoed by the President was again adopted by the parliament after it overrode the President’s veto on May 28.

The law is feared to have the potential to stifle independent media voices. According to the basic provision of the law  media houses and other civil organizations that receive more than twenty percent of their funding from foreign countries must register itself as organizations pursuing the interests of foreign countries.
