Russia-Ukraine War: Russia, for yet another time, has targeted the civilian infrastructure and citizens as more than 17 civilians lost life in shelling that continued overnight in Ukraine’s southern city, Zaporizhzhia. The city is located 125km from the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power plant. The Ukrainian President has denounced the attack, calling it “absolute evil”.

The death toll in the area is expected to rise as the search and rescue operation has been launched following the attack. According to the Ukrainian military’s central command, the Russian forces targeted the residential buildings and killed the sleeping civilians overnight.

“Zaporizhzhia again. Merciless strikes on peaceful people again. On residential buildings, just in the middle of the night,” further adding that 49 people, including six children, were in the hospital.

“Absolute meanness. Absolute evil. Savages and terrorists. From the one who gave this order to everyone who fulfilled this order. They will bear responsibility. For sure. Before the law and before people”, stated Zelenskyy.

The secretary of Zaporizhzhia city council, Anatoliy Kurtev, stated that the recent missile attack had damaged 20 houses and about 50 multi-storey buildings.

Earlier, on Saturday, Moscow’s symbolic Crimean bridge that connects Russia with the Crimean Peninsula collapsed due to a massive explosion in the fuel tank that left at least three dead and set several oil tankers ablaze. The attacks are, therefore, being looked upon as an act of retaliation from the Russian end.

The bridge serves as an important supply link for Russia in southern Ukraine and the recent explosion left the bridge partially collapsed and the closure of two car lanes. However, the traffic resumed on the bridge later.

At the same time, Kremlin had announced the appointment of a new general to lead the Russian side in Ukraine as Russia’s war efforts seemed to falter over the past few weeks.
