Georgia: The National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage of SSP of Georgia started rehabilitation works for St. George’s Church in the village of Kalauri of Gurjaani Municipality.
Upon discovering the severe damage to the church roof, the local clergy immediately reported the situation in partnership with the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. The roof, ravaged by hail, urgently needed urgent rehabilitation. The agency swiftly conducted a thorough inspection, leading to the prompt preparation of the necessary project-cost documentation. The church’s roof is in complete disrepair, and the building lacks proper protection.
The initial phase of the rehabilitation project involved the careful removal of the worn-out tiles from the roofs of both the central and side sections of the church. Currently, the Kiri furnace is being dismantled from under the Kramit. The project also includes the meticulous installation of granite roofing on the roofs of the center and side sections. Furthermore, Sarineli will be arranged with flat creek stones, ensuring a comprehensive restoration of the church’s structure, a process that is being carried out with the utmost care and attention to detail.
The National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia has allocated 58 544 GEL for the rehabilitation of the church. Rehabilitation works are carried out by the company that won the electronic tender, LLC “Kamara.”
The Kalauri St. George Church, a significant cultural heritage monument, was granted this status on April 14, 2020. The church, with its roots dating back to the VI-VII centuries and adorned with paintings from the XVI century, holds a unique and proud place in our cultural history, a testament to our rich heritage and the need for its preservation.
