Georgia: The tactical units of the Coast Guard of the Border Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs successfully completed the four-level assessment of NATO, after which the North Atlantic Council made a positive decision regarding granting Georgia the status of the operational partner of the operation “Sea Guard” in the Mediterranean Sea.
NATO’s maritime security operation “MSO SEA GUARDIAN” was launched in November 2016 and replaced the naval operation “Active Endeavor” (Operation Active Endeavor) operating under NATO Article 5 in 2001-2016.
Operation “Sea Guard” is the only naval operation of the Alliance’s naval forces, the area of ​​operation of which includes the Mediterranean Sea.
The main goal of the operation is to ensure safety at sea and timely response to threats. The mentioned operation is focused on preventing any attempts related to terrorist activity at sea.
In 2016, Georgia officially announced the joining of the boarding tactical groups of the Coast Guard Department of the Border Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to the NATO Pool of Forces, and according to the evaluation standards established by NATO, the training of these groups began. After the law enforcement tactical teams successfully completed a four-year NATO evaluation program, the North Atlantic Council recognized Georgia as an operational partner in Operation Sea Guardian.
This decision marks the beginning of a new phase of deepening practical cooperation between the NATO Naval Forces Command and the Coast Guard of the Border Police.
