There’s that 365 DNI borderline porn boat scene, the insane eroticism of Dark Desire, and an avalanche of super steamy things to watch on Netflix, after all. However, because it was not only NSFW, but full of renegade artistry, Love stood out. Director Gaspar Noé’s POV is one of aggressive vision, and the streaming service just got instantly less cool now that Love is off Netflix.

The film follows a young man named Murphy (Karl Glusman) who learns that his relationship with his girlfriend Electra (Aomi Muyock) is falling apart after the two have an impulsive trip with pretty Danish teen Omi (Klara Kristin). Until Murphy cheats on Electra with Omi, all is perfect. Murphy and Electra’s romance is broken when Omi gets pregnant and decides to hold the baby. When Murphy later discovers that Electra has gone missing, through a series of poignant and explicit flashbacks, he reflects on their relationship.
Is the movie original?
Besides being full of hardcore sex scenes, because it is filled with rebellious artistry, Love stands out. There’s no question that Gaspar Noé can serve up some mind-bending images, whatever you think of his subject matter. Although this movie was puerile and not especially original, in truth, Love tries to be at the forefront of filmmaking. Even if that’s opening a movie of lovers masturbating with each other for an extended clip.
Are there any such movies on Netflix?
It’s the kind of movie you used to watch a lot more on Netflix, too. The library was a hodge podge of famous titles that they could licence and independent movies that had not necessarily made a dent on the box office when Netflix launched. Love may be able to return to Netflix earlier than we thought, but its absence is a service loss. It is emblematic of an evolving streaming problem: as studios make more and more decisions based on creative expression data, those odd movies that stick to you will start disappearing. Netflix used to be a treasure chest of surreal movies trying to relate to viewers at the cinema.
