World: According to a press statement from the European Council, the European Union (EU) agreed to an additional 500 million euros ($544 million) for military equipment for the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Wednesday.

The European Council approved two assistance measures under the European Peace Facility (EPF) that will allow the EU to continue to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ capabilities and resilience in defending the nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as protecting civilians from ongoing Russian military aggression. The necessary information is available on the European Council’s official website.

The EU will add €500 million to the funds already allocated to Ukraine under the EPF, bringing the total amount to €1.5 billion.

“With this €500 million, the EU has given a total of €1.5 billion to support EU Member States’ supplies of military equipment to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The coming weeks will be crucial. As Russia readies for an offensive on the East of Ukraine, it is important that we continue and step up our military assistance to Ukraine in order to protect its land and people and avoid more suffering,” HR/VP Josep Borrell said.

As per the statement by the EU, the measures will financially assist both the provision of equipment and supplies to the Armed Forces of Ukraine by the EU Member States, which will include personal protective equipment, first aid kits, fuel and military equipment made to deliver lethal force for defensive purposes. The time of the assistance measures is also extended by 24 months.

Prior to this, the assistance measures were agreed upon on February 28 and March 23, 2022

In the release, “The European Council also demands Russia to stop its military aggression in the territory of Ukraine immediately.”
