Giorgi Amilakhvari, Tamar Taliashvili introduce UNICEF rep’ to preschool and school education reform initiatives

Giorgi Amilakhvari, Chair of the Committee on Education and Science, and Tamar Taliashvili, First Deputy Chair of the Committee, met with Jessica Catherine Brown, Early Education Specialist, UNICEF Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, and Amy Clancy, UNICEF Deputy Representative in Georgia.

Parliamentary initiatives in the field of education, including the reform of preschool education and the creation of a code of education and science, were discussed at the meeting.

“The meeting was fruitful and important. “We have planned the next effective steps that should be taken in the direction of education for our children,” said Giorgi Amilakhvari.

According to Tamar Taliashvili, First Committee Chairperson of the Committee, the Committee on Education and Science is actively cooperating with the United Nations Children’s Fund in the field of preschool and school education, including at all stages of the ongoing reforms in these areas.

“The subject of today’s meeting was the preschool education reform, which includes offering alternative, early and preschool services to our population. We have identified the needs of our population and families in the regions, including the highlands or regions with different types of challenges. Our task is to adapt the preschool education system to specific needs in order to protect the best interests of our citizens and our children. The committee also started working on the Education Code, an important part of which will be preschool and school education. “In the context of legislative initiatives, it is important to involve UNDP experts in this process so that our legislative initiatives can share and build on the best practices of foreign countries.”

As Amy Clans, UNICEF Deputy Representative in Georgia noted, UNICEF is pleased that the Georgian Parliament will support the conceptualization and development of the Education and Science Code.

“We are pleased to work closely with the Parliament of Georgia and will continue to work together to provide quality education for all children, especially children under the age of six. 

This cooperation is very important for strengthening the education system in Georgia in general. “We really appreciate this partnership and look forward to continuing this relationship,” Amy Clancy said.
