Georgia: Meeting held on water mangement in Batumi

Recently a meeting was held on the proper water management in Batumi City at Batumi State University. This was held with the initiative of the Environment Protection and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament of the Republic of Georgia as well as with the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture and the organisation of the USAID Economic Management Program.

Recently a meeting was held on the proper water management in Batumi City at Batumi State University. This was held with the initiative of the Environment Protection and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament of the Republic of Georgia as well as with the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture and the organisation of the USAID Economic Management Program.

On this occasion the participants of the event got a warm welcome from Maya Bitadze the chairman of the environment protection and natural resources committee, who spoke about the water resources management law, rules and regulations, and the innovations reflected in it.

Speaking on the occasion, Maya Bitadze said “ The Georgian parliament have recently adopted the new water resources management law in the country, which is based on the association agreement with the European Union in all its member countries. This important law is one of the main aspects for the proper management of water resources, including climate change in all municipalities of all the region of Georgia”.

It is to be noted that the main goal of today’s meeting was to familiarise the general public with the main objectives of the Water Resources Law and to further strengthen the role of municipalities in the process of resource management.

It must be underlined that this is the law that should create the basis for the correct directions of water resources management added by the key speaker of the event.

Similarly, during the event, while speaking, the director of USAID Caucasus Economic Governance Office, Michel Koshelsky, described the importance of the law. According to him, this law will help the population of Georgia to access quality water resources and is an important document in the direction of environmental protection across all regions.

According to the First Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, Nino Thandilashvili, the law, which will come into force for the month of September 2026, includes the principles of sustainable management of water resources of the country.

According to him, the law also imposes a number of obligations on different municipalities in terms of water resources management.

Nino Thandilashvili also added,It is exceptionally important to inform the representatives of the local authorities and the population at public forums about the various aspects like what innovations the mentioned law envisages.

At the public meeting, the attendees of the event got themself familiar with the main directions and principles of the water resources management reform and its related laws.

As the whole world is facing the scarcity of pure water, most countries across the globe have been forced to adopt measures for proper water management in their respective countries. At the same time there are international organisations and programs have also been launched to make the proper use of Water.

A large number of attendees attended this event. They also shared their valuable suggestions and thoughts for the effective and ground-level implementation of water management rules and regulations.
