Georgia: Culture ministry to organize conservation works of heritage buildings

The Conservation works were successfully carried out in the government monastery complex by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Georgia.

The Ministry of Culture and Sports of Georgia’s National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia organized the conservation of the facade of the World Cultural Heritage Monument at the Government monastery.

It is to be added that the conservation works were carried out according to the project which was evaluated by the International Council for Cultural Heritage (ICOMOS) in May 2023 and said that Georgian stone conservatives can use this methodology and approach on other monuments as well.

Georgian Minister of Culture and Sports Thea Tsulukiani along with the Deputy Minister Director of National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage Nikoloz Aznaurashvili, State Trustee in Mtskheta-Mtianeti David Nozadze, Chairman of Historical-Architectural Cultural Heritage Restoration-Conservation Section Tariel Kiparoidze, Architect-Restaurators – Misha Gelashvili and Niko Zazunishvili, Wall Painting and Stone Conservation Specialist Salome Akhalashvili visited the site to take stock of the ongoing work.

It is worth noting that in the second half of 2023, the Tsokoli stone and stations of Mtskheti Main Monastery Conservation work to arrange the drainage system of Nino Church was carried out for the first time in decades according to a detailed plan.

It should also be noted that before the rehabilitation works started under the order of the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage a relevant conservation project was prepared in the year 2022 which was positively evaluated by the International Council for Cultural Heritage (ICOMOS).

Meanwhile various types of works have been carried out in the government monastery complex in the past years. As part of these works both inside and out of the temple, marks have been lifted, after which conservation of the newly unveiled lower parts of the cathedral will be necessary. In addition it was necessary to organize the water coming from the well pipes on the North Wall. As for St. Nino’s small church, a slate of newly installed.
