On May 20,2024 the beekeepers from various parts of Georgia visited Mukhuri and celebrated the World Bee Day. This day is celebrated to highlights the crucial role of bees as pollinators, and to underline the need for their protection.
Beekeeping Centre of Mukhuri Village in Chkhorotsku Municipality of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti area for the organisation of this grand event was selected by the Georgian Beekeepers Union.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA), the MEPA Agriculture Scientific-Research Centre along with Rural Development Agency, and the local administration of the Chkhorotsku Municipality supported for holding the successful event.
It is worth noting that the Mukhuri Beekeeping Centre was established in 2017 and stands as a unique hub for the beekeepers . The Mukhuri center have an Artificial insemination (AI) laboratory contributing to innovative beekeeping practices to keep pace with the latest trend in the industry.
A significant number of beekeepers attended the event at the Mukhuri Beekeeping Centre. The event attendees also had the opportunity to taste and experience the renowned “Mukhuri Honey,” distinguished by its exceptional taste and quality, a geographical indication granted by Sakpatenti.
As part of the event, the Rural Development Agency and renowned beekeeping expert Brigitte Gross from the Carolina State of the USA conducted comprehensive training sessions for the attending beekeepers, furthering their knowledge and skills in the field.
The Georgian Beekeepers Union (GBU) is facilitated by the Mercy Corps Georgia implemented ALCP2 program, which is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in cooperation with the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) and Sweden.
The Georgia Beekeepers Union is an Umbrella organization founded in 2018 by nine legal and nine individual entities. The union is working for the upliftment of the profession across all main region of the country. The Union also aimed to promote the beekeepeng to enhance the income of Georgian farmers as well.
