Otar Shamugia highlights issue of climate challenge in Parliament address

Otar Shamugia, the minister of environment protection and agriculture  has spoken on the various measures taken by the ministry to mitigate the challenges of climate change and global warming.

Otar Shamugia, the minister of environment protection and agriculture  has spoken on the various measures taken by the ministry to mitigate the challenges of climate change and global warming.

The minister’s comment came during his address to Parliament. On this occasion  he was presenting the 2023 report on the ministry’s activities.   

 

Speaking specifically on the occasion the minister said “In the growing threat of global warming and climate change, special importance is attached to the assessment of natural hazards by the Ministry. At the same time  the Ministry has taken many initiatives for the accurate prediction of the weather and expected natural processes in some regions of the country as well.”

 

He further said, “In this direction  many significant steps have been taken in the previous years that also found mention in the  European Commission’s enlargement report. The enlargement report of the Europan Commission was published last year. As per that particular report  at the central and local levels  Georgians have already taken important steps for the development of civil safety and disaster risk management systems.

According to the minister, “There are two modern radar units with the latest technology operating in Western and Eastern Georgia. Moreover  more than  240 hydro-meteorological observation stations are also working in the country. The number of these stations will be increased by the  end of the year, and 40 more stations will be added by 2025 which  will also improve weather forecasting.”

 

The minister  revealed that the preparation of maps for different types of natural hazards for the entire territory of Georgia is in the final stage with the instant Implementation of information telecommunication systems (ICT).

 

Minister expressed hopes that with the implementation of the latest and updated technology for accurate weather prediction, the agriculture sector will benefit in many ways in the near future. The minister also assured  that the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture is working with dedication to uplift the country’s agriculture sector as well.
