Tbilisi: Nikoloz Marsagishvili has become the new judge of Supreme Court of Georgia. The Georgian Parliament announced his appointment on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

It is worth noting that on September 17 the last session of Parliament was held. All the present legislators on this occasion elected Nikoloz Marsagishvili as the 28th member of the Supreme Court. The decision was taken after the voting.

There were 83 legislators who voted in favor of Nikoloz Marsagishvili. None of the members voted against Him. So he was elected as a judge of the Supreme Court with a vote ratio of 83:0.

The result of the voting proceeding was in favour of Nikoloz Marsagishvili. The ruling party  Georgian Dream  completed the remaining formalities and appointed him judge of the Supreme Court.

It is also to be noted further that “During the voting time most of the legislators of opposition parties did not join the plenary session of Parliament. This happened as opposition parties have not been participating in the work of Parliament since the adoption of the foreign agents law.

As per Georgia’s legal rules Nikoloz Marsagishvili will replace the incumbent Supreme Court Judge Ekaterine Gasitashvili. The ten-year term of incumbent Supreme Court Judge Ekaterine Gasitashvili will expire in 2025 and he will be replaced by Nikoloz Marsagishvili.

Marsagishvili is known for his opposition to the creation of an extraordinary mechanism. This mechanism was proposed to check the integrity of judges and considered significant before Georgia’s joining in the European Union. Notably since 2020 Nikoloz Marsagishvili has been member of the High Council of Justice.

At the same time he has also been HCoJ’s secretary since 2020 and he was again elected to this post in 2024. He has been working in the Judiciary since 2008, and his tenure includes being a judge in the Tbilisi City Court.

Later  in 2019-2020 he was appointed as Chair of the Tbilisi City Court. This June the Georgian parliament approved the appointment of new judges to the Supreme Court.
