The First Georgian Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Nino Tandilashvili spoke at the high-level conference COP 29 “Supporting the implementation of climate-friendly agriculture,” in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In her speech, Nino Tandilashvili focused on the importance of the implementation of high-tech agro-food systems, which play a crucial role in the effective management of measures against climate change.
According to the Deputy Minister, the implementation of climate-friendly technologies in the agriculture sector is a vital direction for the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia. The programs of the Ministry of Rural Development Agency actively promote the implementation and use of various green technologies in the agriculture sector. One such initiative is the state’s program “Innovative Technologies Grant Program”, which promotes the knowledge and skills development of farmers.
It was noted that one of the preferences of the Georgian government is to strengthen irrigation systems and promote sustainable water use, which is essential for climate sustainability and agricultural productivity boost.
To this end, through the efforts of the state, the mobilization of financial resources has been unprecedented in the last 2 years, for $300 million, including support from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, to enable the country to develop modern irrigation systems in the coming years.
In her speech, Nino Tandilashvili also mentioned, “Georgia is committed to adapting agro-food systems to the risks of climate change. The country is developing a range of multiple-hazard early warning systems designed to protect farmers from various climate-related risks such as floods, landslides, etc.” “This system also includes forecasting drought and providing necessary information to farmers,” she added.
“As I mentioned, the Government of Georgia supports the implementation and dissemination of modern technologies in agro-food systems through various initiatives. We realize that we still have a lot to do and we are ready to strengthen our efforts,” said the first deputy minister.
High-ranking delegates from almost all countries of the world attended the conference “Supporting climate-friendly agriculture implantation” held within the framework of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change Parties (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The conference was organized by the Secretariat of the Food and Agriculture World Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
