Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Georgia attended the opening ceremony of COP29 (Conference of Parties) in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
The 29th session of COP29 will discuss the progress of previous years and what steps need to be taken in the future for sustainable development.
Prime Minister Kobakhidze, taking to his social media handles shared glimpses of the event. PM stated on his official Facebook page that, “I participated in the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku opening ceremony.
The leaders participating in the conference were hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutierrez and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.”
The Prime Minister further stated, “I attended the opening session of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit and the opening of the High-Level Meeting of Heads of State and Government.”
It is worth noting that as per tradition, the leaders of the participating states of the summit took a joint photo. Prime Minister within the framework of the conference, also will give a speech at the COP29 leaders’ summit as well as at panel discussions, which will held in a round table format on various topics as well.
Notably along with the Prime Minister many other senior leaders also participate in COP29 with the delegation. Some of the major leaders include the First Vice Prime Minister Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ilia Darchiashvili and Head of Government Administration Levan Zhorzholiani.
Although the world is facing many issues associated with climate change and growing temperatures, many world leaders including two Asian big powers, China and India are not participating in this event.
The COP (Conference of Parties) is the top decision-making body of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). It is held every year unless parties decide otherwise.
The UNFCCC is an agreement between 198 parties, including 197 countries and the European Union. It is also regarded as an umbrella agreement. The Paris Agreement is also a product of the conference of parties which was held in 2015.
