Tbilisi: The Parliament of the Republic of Georgia approved the appointment of three new judges to the supreme court. The names include Justice Badri Shonia and Justice Gocha Jeiranashvili.
The parliament adopted the decision with seventy-eight votes; however their lifelong mandates will take effect on October 18 this year. On the other hand Justice Gizo Ubilova was appointed with 80 votes and his mandate will start immediately as the judge of the Supreme Court.
According to the latest available information the Georgian Court Watch has begun the process of filling 27 out of 28 seats of lifelong judges of the Supreme Court of Georgia. The Georgian Court Watchdog also added that “With these appointments the Georgian Dream effectively completes the process of filing the vacancies of the Supreme Court as per the requirement as well.”
On the other hand many CSOs (civil socialet organisatio ) said that ” due to the great role of the judiciary and especially the Supreme Court it becomes necessary to fill all the posts of the court with conscientious personnel.”
The civil society organization further added that while getting the status of the candidate country many specific recommendations were made to reform the judicial system. Some of these recommendations also include the establishment of an extraordinary mechanism to check the integrity of persons before they are appointed to the responsible posts.
While observing the appointment, the Court Watch added, “However, the ruling regime and the speaker of the are refusing the recommendation of the European Union and even declared the issue closed. This also amounts to discrimination against the judicial process of the country.
They further added that “Today by this process of the election of their loyal to a group of influential judges to the highest body of the court the Georgian dream has again caused greater discrimination to the concept of fair transparency as well. According to some people this is a challenge for the country which may affect the EU integration process of the country.
