PM Irakli Kobakhidze: Final adoption of foreign agent  law is first step toward transparency

Amid the strong criticism from  many local, regional, and international leaders,  Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze has called it a revolutionary step towards transparency. During a press conference after the final adoption , PM expressed hopes for smooth Europe Union’s integration of Georgia after the implementation of the bill.

While rejecting all opponents’ fears and speculation   PM stated, “The foreign agent bill has the potential to bring transparency in the workings of the civil organization; moreover, it will create a better basis for ensuring Georgia’s accession to the European Union.”

The PM   extended his gratitude to all the members of parliament who voted in favour of the bill and showed their love for the country.  He   claimed that the foreign agent law will fulfill the main recommendation of the European Union, which is depolarization, further adding that the transparent law will encourage the strengthening of the country’s democratic institutions and rapid economic growth.

In the  concluding remarks, the PM said, “The Law on Transparency will create a better basis for ensuring Georgia’s accession to the European Union; the controversy  around the law is totally unwanted .” Moreover  up to 2030  the country will be better prepared than other aspiring countries who want to join the European Union.

At the same time the PM while  reacting to the Venice Commission recommendation, said, “The commission lacks professionalism and expertise. In contrast  the Georgian government has well-qualified lawyers, doctors of law, and professors who have much higher qualifications than Venice Commission’s  experts.” So we cannot trust the opinion of a commission with members whose qualifications is  questionable.”

He also added that his government is always committed to protect the basic rights which includes the freedom of speech and expression as well. He also accused the opposition parties for creating false narratives around the law by misleading the protests.
