The President of Georgia Salome once again reiterated that Georgia government should launch more serious efforts for early integration into European Union. She said large number of people support country integration into European Union.
The comment of President in this regard came during her interview with a TV channel. The president during her interview added that, “What Georgia needs is moral and political support, because since the day of independence Georgia has been striving for European and Euro-Atlantic integration and this course is supported by 80% of its population.”
As per statement of President, despite the 2008 conflict the country has maintained its journey in this direction and now cannot accept being returned to the sphere of Russian influence due to fraudulent elections and a puppet government. The country has been fighting Russian domination for two centuries and will never accept this.
In addition, President underlined, Europe must play its role in the region as a foreign policy player, as a central force around which democratic Europe is uniting. It must use its leverage and instruments also in this direction.
According to President, Today, in Georgia, foreign aid is very limited due to new Russian laws. The laws prohibit foreign funding of civil society and the media. Currently, Georgian media organizations are looking for support from Europe, because they are in a very difficult situation.
She further underlined, Strong Georgia will finally establish Europe as a full-fledged power in its own region. This is especially important for Georgia, because Georgia is located in the Black Sea region, which is a strategic centre for European infrastructure projects.
Supporting Georgia and supporting its democracy means supporting future projects and economic development. If Hungary’s Prime Minister Orban can make decisions independently, I think other governments can also determine their own policies and support that part of Georgia that is moving towards democracy, has been fighting in the streets for 78 days and is proving its resilience, said President.
This is the future of Georgia, and I think that European countries, collectively or individually will at least support Georgia’s European future, although I hope that together, she concluded in her interviews.
