Project “Reducing risk of disasters” to implement in 12 municipalities

Georgia: The project “Reduction of the risk of catastrophes caused by climate change in Georgia”, additionally, will be implemented in 12 municipalities.

The project “Reduction of the Risk of Climate Change Disasters in Georgia” will be implemented together with the existing target municipalities (Gori, Lagodekhi, Signaghi, Telavi, Akhmeta, Samtredia, Abasha, Senaki, Khobi, Kobuleti, Ozurgeti, Lanchkhuti, Chokhatauri) will also be implemented in the municipalities of Ambrolauri, Oni, Shuakhevi, Khulo, Khelvachauri, Mestia, Chkhorotsku, Zestafoni, Sachkheri, Chiaturi, Khoni and Martvili. An information meeting was held for representatives of the new target municipalities to present the project.

The Deputy Director of the Center for Environmental Information and Education, Ekaterine Bendeliani, and the Deputy Head of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Georgia, Anna Chernishova, opened the meeting and discussed the importance of local municipalities’ opportunities within the project.

Participants discussed the importance of community-based risk management, hazard maps prepared within the program, and activities to be implemented.

Within the project “Reducing the risk of disasters caused by climate change in Georgia“, modern climate change adaptation mechanisms, including hydrometeorological observation and early notification systems, should be implemented. Significant works will be carried out in Georgia’s 11 large river basins, where the risk of disasters is exceptionally high. In addition, the rate of public awareness about climate change will increase.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Agriculture of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara Zaza Shavadze, Vasil Gedevanishvili, the Head of the National Environment Agency, and the interested public.

The project “Reduction of the Risk of Climate Change Disasters in Georgia” is funded by the Georgian government, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and the governments of Switzerland and Sweden. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) provides its implementation.
