Levan loselian attended an international conference on defenders (Ombudsmen) in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan on October 2. The conference discussed the role of the Ombudsman in protecting human rights.
The role of national environmental institutions was also discussed. The participants discussed the role of these institution for the reducing the ill effects of climate change on earth.
It is worth noting that in his speech at the event, Levan loselian spoke about the public’s right to access important and relevant information about climate change and its consequences. He noted that one of the priority directions of the Public Defender’s activity is the supervision works in the direction of environmental protection in any part of Georgia.
The environmental agency is actively involved in monitoring of the effects of climate change and has a number of mechanisms to ensure access to information for the general public. At the forum ombudsmen from different countries and heads of human rights protection institutions shared their knowledge and best practices with each other.
Many high officials from all sides were present on this occasion. Some of these famous personalities include the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva.
The Minister of Justice, Farid Ahmadov was also present and addressed the attendees. Similarly the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev, the representative of the United Nations Development Program in Azerbaijan Alessandra Rocasalvo and the OIC-IPHRC gave a welcome speech to the invited guests.
It is worth noting that on the sidelines of the meeting, the Public Defender of Georgia Levan Ioseliani personally met with his Azerbaijani colleague, Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva.
The parties discussed the current situation in the Caucasus region from the point of view of human rights protection. He got acquainted with the mandate and priorities of the human rights protection institutions of Georgia and Azerbaijan and agreed on future cooperation to address human rights issues.
