Georgia: The Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Solomon Pavliashvili, held a large-scale meeting with manufacturers and importers of products (batteries and accumulators, tires, electrical and electronic equipment and oils).

At the meeting, the meeting will discuss the deadlines for the implementation of four technical regulations adopted by the Government of Georgia on May 25, 2020 (waste oil management, tire waste management, waste management of electrical and electronic equipment, and waste management of batteries and accumulators).

“In order to fulfil the extended obligation of the producer, from June 1 of the current year, four technical regulations adopted by the Government of Georgia will enter into force, which means that the organizations subordinated to the MGV by June 1, before the product is placed on the market, it must be registered in the MGV electronic register, and from July 1 of this year, all importers and distributors will be prohibited from placing on the market the products supplied by manufacturers who are not registered in the MVG register and are not members of the MVG organization. While still in the process of drafting the technical regulations, we actively cooperated with the representatives of the business sector and took into account their comments and suggestions. I think, with complex approaches, we will undoubtedly get positive results,” Solomon Pavliashvili said.

As Maia Bitadze, Chairperson of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources noted, the state should make decisions that do not burden the business sector and, at the same time, producers feel responsible for the effective management of the waste management process.

At the meeting, Alverd Chankseliani, Head of the Waste and Chemicals Management Department of the Ministry, underlined the deadlines for the implementation of the technical regulations of the extended obligation of the manufacturer and noted that the implementation of the deadlines for the implementation of the four technical regulations is crucial, for which the Ministry has taken a number of steps to take into account the positions, comments and suggestions of the producers.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Finance Mamuka Baratashvili, about 200 representatives of the relevant services of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, Business Association and the private sector.
