Georgian Agriculture Minister meets US State Department’s special representative for global food security Cary Fowler

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Otar Shamugia, met with the US State Department’s special representative for global food security, Cary Fowler, within the framework of an official visit to Washington.

“For many years, the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia has been in strategic cooperation with the United States of America, which is reflected in the supported programs and projects. The financial aid allocated by the USA for the implemented and ongoing projects has brought important results in terms of the development of the agricultural sector”, said Otar Shamugia.

As the minister noted, food security is one of the most important challenges for Georgia, as well as for other countries, especially in light of the crisis in the region.

At the meeting held in the US State Department, it was emphasized that for Georgia, at this stage, in order to ensure food security, it is important to have quality seed material, appropriate agricultural equipment, transfer of modern technologies and knowledge to farmers. In this regard, the support of the United States of America is particularly important.

As noted by Gary Fowlers, the United States of America continues to support Georgia in the development of the industry and in overcoming challenges.

Georgian Ambassador to the United States of America Davit Zalkaliani and Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Nino Thandilashvili attended the meeting held at the State Department.

“It is important that we not only talk about the near-term perspectives of cooperation, but also consider the issue in the medium and long term, which implies support from the US side, both from an expert point of view and with technical means. The visit of the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture serves this purpose and I am sure it will definitely bring concrete tangible results”, said Davit Zalkalian.
