Kakheti: The rehabilitation work of the Alaverdi Cathedral is in full swing. Scaffolding continues around the neck of the dome and on the inner side of the facade of the episcopal residence.
At the same time  scaffolding on the western window and bell gate of the Alaverdi Cathedral, which were damaged by natural disasters  has been completed.   As per the information shared by the local administration  at the first stage  specialists examined the damaged areas of the western window (stoa) and the bell tower.
A rehabilitation project will be developed in the coming days. After the construction of the scaffolding around the cathedral’s dome and the episcopal residence  research and design of St. George’s Cathedral will be possible.
It is to be added that as a result of the disaster of June 25  the tin cover of the dome of the Alaverdi Cathedral was damaged  the stones were broken in various places of the northern skirt  the tile roof was damaged in the rest of the places the windows of the western side of the cathedral and the dome were broken.
Furthermore due to the disaster  the tin roofs of the bell tower and the bishop’s house were damaged  and the balcony of the palace was demolished from the dome. Similarly  the cross fell down  and the infrastructure of the surrounding area was damaged.
After an agreement between the representatives of the Alaverdi Diocese and the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia  it was decided to immediately build a scaffold on the cathedral’s facade so that specialists could work on the dome.
In the last month on June 26, the Minister of Culture and Sports of Georgia  Tea Tsulukiani, together with the General Director of the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia  Nikoloz Aznaurashvili  arrived in Alaverdi and got acquainted with the situation in the monastery complex.
During her visit  the minister also assured of the project’s early completion. She stated that there would be no dearth of financial aid from the Government and that the work would be completed very soon.
