Georgia: A meeting with representatives of the European Medium-Term Weather Forecasts Center (ECMWF) expert group was held at the National Environment Agency.
Experts assessed the state of forecasting and early reporting agencies and introduced ECMWF’s modern forecasting products to specialists of the Department of Hydrometeorology. During the working visit, the agency specialists were trained on the use of modern technologies for climate data and forecasting products.
The European Medium-Term Weather Forecasts Centre (ECMWF) is one of the world’s leading meteorological organizations. It produces and distributes digital weather forecasts to 34 European member countries, cooperates with member countries’ meteorological and hydrological services, and promotes strengthening their capabilities.
Georgia became an associate member country of ECMWF in December 2021.
It is important to note that the cooperation between Georgia and the European Centre for Medium-Term Weather Forecasts is underway under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) climate initiative, which is being implemented by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the governments of Georgia, Sweden and Switzerland.
The Green Climate Fund is a climate finance fund established within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Considered the world’s largest fund, GCF’s objective is to assist developing countries with climate change adaptation and mitigation activities.Â
As a result of ongoing cooperation, the agency is continuously adopting ECMWF’s modern meteorological data and forecasting products, which are critical for improving the accuracy of weather forecasting in Georgia and increasing the effectiveness of early notification systems.
