Aleksandre Metreveli is the only tennis player from the former Soviet Union to have played in the finals of Wimbledon three times—in 1973 in singles and 1968 and 1970 in doubles. He was the world’s ninth mogul.

In 1973, he gave up the Wimbledon final to Jan Kodesh. The Georgian tennis player is a 16-time European singles, doubles, and mixed doubles champion. The legendary athlete is a participant in 33 Grand Slam tournaments. From 1963 to 1980, he played 105 times and won 80 in the Davis Cup. The famous tennis player is the 29-time USSR champion in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles and the absolute champion of the VI Spartakiad of the People of the USSR.

Alexander Metreveli was the first tennis player of the Soviet Union 13 times. In 1966, he was named the best sportsman in Georgia.

He is a Cavalier of the Order of Honor. In 2015, during the Wimbledon tournament, the president of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) awarded him with a special medal of the Davis Cup. In 2017, the athlete was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi. Aleksandre Metreveli is an honored master of sport of the USSR.

Alexander Irakliyevich Metreveli, nicknamed Sandro, is a retired Soviet tennis player of Georgian background. He is an honorary citizen of Australia. His grandson Aleksandre Metreveli, a professional tennis player, has represented Georgia in the Davis Cup. He was active from 1962 to 1980 and won 62 singles titles.
