Melissa Skerrit wrote: “A Dominican National Icon and treasure which I have had the privilege of working with has sadly passed away. Mr Alwin Bully, designer of Dominica’s illustrious flag, teacher, artist, headmaster, costume creator, and film director are just a few of the many roles he has played in his endless contributions to our culture.

His desire to pass on his skills and knowledge was inspiring as he continued to teach and share in any way he could in these later years. Condolences and prayers to his wife, Anita Bully, to his children, grandchildren and extended family.

Your loss is felt by us all as we mourn the departure of a true gentleman, a boundlessly creative mind and an irreplaceable member of our Dominican family.”

At the same time, tributes have been pouring in from all over Dominica, who have been saddened by his loss. Many close associates and acquaintances of Alwin Bully have extended tributes and shared their memories with Bully.

Hazel-Shillingford-Ricketts, Honorees of the UWIAA Dominica Chapter, September 2014, stated: “He will live on in our memories as the Great Dominican who contributed much nationally, regionally and internationally. Sincere condolences to his wife, Anita Bully who was the pillar behind him, his lovely children, his siblings, other family members. colleagues, friends and all Dominicans.”

Alwin Bully rang a bell in the world of Arts and Culture is a gross understatement. It sounded a mighty fanfare. The Son of Charles and Ena Bully and sibling to Idris, Colin and Barbara, Alwin Anthony Bully entered the world in a good, multitalented company. He had the privilege of growing up on King George in the heart of Roseau. It was in this bubbling masquerade cauldron that he developed his deep appreciation for theatre, music, costume creation, folklore and history. Alwin’s career as a teacher, playwright, artist and cultural administrator has had a resounding impact locally, regionally and internationally.
