Batumi, Georgia: The construction of a 14-km highway bypass of Batumi has been completed. The road has been opened for motor transport on October 11, 2024.

The Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Irakli Karseladze announced at the opening of 14 km highway of Batumi bypass, “Today, the road was opened, whose construction process was going on amid many challenges. Under the toughest geological conditions, overtaking various challenges, 14 km, 2-lane Asphalt-Concrete Highway, comprising 20 bridges and 5 tunnels, fully complies with modern road safety standards and is equipped with a road lighting system.”

According to the minister, 43% of the transport on the old road will go through the Batumi bypass. Ideally, it would take about four times less time—8-9 minutes—to cover the distance from Makhinjauri to Khelvachauri.

He also mentioned,” Before the construction of the Batumi bypass, transport, including international transit, used to move in residential and tourist areas, which made it difficult to access and created traffic jams. Batumi bypass and Kobuleti bypass completely relaxes traffic in the resort zone of Adjara.”

“The connection with Gonio, Kvariat and Sarp will improve much. Soon the construction of the Batumi-Sarfi highway will begin, increasing the tourist potential of resort settlements,” he added.

Irakli Karseladze said, “The new highway to Sarpa, with a 7.5 km tunnel, will completely relax the traffic even in these areas. We will start the construction of 2 additional lanes of Kobuleti bypass and most importantly, in 2025 travel from Tbilisi to Batumi will be fully possible by highway.”

The bypass road takes care of Batumi and completely relaxes the city from transit traffic, the new road starts at Makhinjauri and ends in Khelvachauri.

4 transport junctions have been set up on the bypass, through which transport can connect both nearby villages and the main streets entering Batumi.

The new highway has been constructed in full compliance with international road safety standards, where all road safety measures have been taken and to the highest standard, provided with road lighting system

Batumi bypass construction project was implemented within the framework of loans received from Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and co-financing of the state budget. The cost of the project was 330 million GEL
