The second edition of the “theatre festival of Sighnaghi” began on June 4, 2024 with a play by Nikoloz Luarsabishvili. The festival theatre was founded by the Ministry of Culture to promote Georgian culture and traditions across the world.
The festival was held for the first time in 2023 with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Georgia and the initiative of Sighnaghi Municipality. The majority Deputy Davit Songhulashvili also supported the festival organization. In this festival’s second edition artists from Georgian and foreign theaters will participate. It will include artists from Turkey, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, and two troupes from Spain.
Nikoloz Luarsabishvili’s play “Firosman” by the “Monetary Moon Theater” was displayed on the first day of the beginning. The festival was attended by many dignitaries, including the Minister of Culture and Sports Tea Tsulukiani. The other who attended the festival were the Majority Members of Sighnaghi, Sagarejo, and Gurjaani Davit Songhulashvili, Kakheti State Commissioner Giorgi Aladashvili, Sighnaghi Municipality Mayor Malkhaz Begiashvili, Gurjaani Municipality Mayor Giorgi Machavariani, Kvarli Municipality Mayor Givi Zautashvili.
The Sighnaghi International Theater Festival will take place during the week of June. The audience will have the opportunity to see performances at public theaters located near cultural centers of different municipalities. They can also enjoy joint performances of amateur troupes and state theaters.
Saba Aslamazishvili is the young director of this theatre festival.The jury to select the winners comprises theater critics, directors, and theater experts, two of whom are foreigners. They will select the winners of the first, second, and third place among Georgian and foreign troupes.
On the sidelines of the festival a one-week educational program was also held. In this program, master classes, workshops, and public lectures were held for interested persons.
The festival will end on June 11. Its main objective besides others is to integrate with the Georgian theater’s world amateur troupes that do not have an independent legal status. It will also encourage theatrical performers in Georgia, promote the Sighnaghi as a cultural and creative center, and popularize theatrical art in the city.
