Georgia: The Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Otar Shamugia, hosts a working meeting with the National Environment Agency of Georgia and the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki, the capital of the Republic of Finland.

The Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Otar Shamugia, attended the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Meteorology, Climate, and Environment.

During the meeting, Otar Shamugia said, “In 2025, a weather forecasting system and early notifications corresponding to international standards will be installed in Georgia.”

During the working visit, Otar Shamugia met with Peter Taalas, Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). The Minister talked about the importance of the memorandum signed between the National Environment Agency of Georgia and the Finnish Meteorological Institute and emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation between the two countries to mitigate the effects of climate change.

“The Memorandum will allow us, with your involvement, to modernize meteorological and environmental observation networks, as well as to modernize appropriate equipment and laboratories; development of weather, climate, and air quality modeling and forecasting systems; as well modernize the early warning service delivery platform, and create new services and products that are beneficial.” S will bring to the population and interested consumers; let’s improve climate change Methods and instruments in the direction of research,” said Otar Shamugia.

As the Minister noted, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia is implementing the expansion of the hydrometeorological observation network and modern information-telecommunication and forecasting systems.

Two hundred thirty-one hydrometeorological stations have already been installed across the country, significantly improving the quality of weather forecasts and the effectiveness of early warnings of impending natural events.

According to Peter Taalas, Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), refining international meteorological systems is a precondition for economic development in the country; therefore, it is essential and welcome that the Georgian government invests in this direction.

“It is essential that Georgia implements reforms according to the standards of the European Union countries. We will continue to cooperate and share knowledge with Georgian experts,” the Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) stated.

The Meeting and Memorandum Signing Event held at the Meteorological Institute of Finland, together with Otar Shamugia, First Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia Nino Tandilashvili, Ambassador of Emergency and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Republic of Finland and Kingdom of Sweden Irakli Khutsurauli and Head of the National Environment Agency of Georgia Vasil Gedevanishvili were present.
