Georgia: The rehabilitation of Christ of the Savior’s Church in the village of Old Senaki was successfully completed on November 6, 2024.
In 2023 the specialists of the National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia have developed a project of rehabilitation works of the Savior’s Christmas Church, based on which the replacement of the damaged tin tire of the church was planned.
Rehabilitation works of the temple were performed by the company that won the electronic tender “Temple +” Ltd. 205 058 GEL was spent for rehabilitation works by the agency.
Rehabilitation works renewed and strengthened the damaged structure under the tower, cleaned the cathedral’s facade, restored the damaged brick fragments, removed the seams, stripped the layer of paint on the outer perimeter of the dome, and cleaned/renewed the elements of the drainage and stone paving. In addition, the dome wood mirrors have been replaced with new, solid wood mirrors and outfitted elements.
The Church of the Savior of the Old Senaki is located in the village of Old Senaki in the central district of Senaki municipality, on the village cemetery. The cathedral is a cross-dome garbage. The facade of the cathedral is filled with sophisticated artistic and architectural elements.
According to historical sources, the temple was built in the 17th century. Its original rubble was a large basilica, but after a thorough renovation in the 19th century, it became a cross-domed rubble.
Interesting are the reports of Italian missionary Archangelo Lambert, who lived in Georgia, specifically in Samegrelo, from 1630 to 1649.
After returning to the homeland, the book “Description of the Samegrelo,” published in 1655, includes a map of the Samegrello, where the old Senaki church is celebrated.
Senaki
Senaki is a city in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, western Georgia. It is located between Tekhura and Tsivi at an elevation of 28–38 meters above sea level.
