Georgia: The Sighnaghi Historical-Ethnographic Museum also known as Georgian National Museum is all set to host an exhibition of a famous Georgian Painter, Mose Toidze. The exhibition is scheduled to be held from 27 March to 15 September, 2025.
The exhibition will feature the representative of the first generation of professional Georgian painters, Professor Mose Toidze (1871-1953). He is also one of the founders of the new Georgian painting and is the divisor of the People’s Art Studio.
Mose Toidze’s paintings showcase the complex process of merging Georgian painting with European artistic trends. His work is an important and intimate part of national paintings.
The paintings made by Mose Toidze range from classical academic painting to modernist experiments. This wide range of his work makes him one of the prominent figures of Georgian painting. He has also contributed greatly to the history of Georgian art development.
It is to be noted that the exhibition will be featuring up to 50 graphic and painting works of Mose Toidze. All these paintings belong to Georgian Art named after Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of History and Ethnography.
Moreover, the artist’s paintings are well preserved in various museums, including the National Museum of Georgia, and a house-museum named after him. These museums feature paintings, graphic works, private archive and photographic materials of the artist, Mose Toidze.
Mose Toidze
Mose Toidze began his artistic career as a follower of Repin school. His work is multi-genre and reflects a blend of Russian and contemporary European trends.
He founded a studio in Georgia in 1922 which produced several great artists such as Ucha Japaridze, Simon Virsaladze, K. Maghalashvili, K. Merabisgvili, D. Kakabadze, K. Sanadze, and others.
Mose Toidze ran the studio till 1930 after which he became a professor at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. His diploma thesis “Mtskhetoba” was awarded a golden medal for its contribution in the Georgian painting.
