The Head of the National Environment Agency of Georgia, Elene Ghubianur, participated in the meeting, which was held on the initiative of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) – “Early Warning Systems in the South Caucasus Early Warning For All Event” (South Caucasus Early Warning For All Event).
It is also worth noting that the meeting was supported by the Finnish Government and was held in Helsinki on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
The LEPL National Environmental Agency of Georgia, whose main role is handling environmental monitoring, keeps a regular check on the Georgian environment. The participants of the meeting discussed national advances in early warning, regional and cross-border cooperation in hydrology, practical mechanisms for exchanging meteorological data, promoting the effective use of modern technologies, and existing challenges.
Furthermore, the representatives of relevant agencies of the Republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan were also present at the working meeting. The parties discussed the strengthening and importance of regional cooperation opportunities in the direction of early warning.
It should be noted that in 2023, the first joint working meeting was held between representatives of hydrometeorological services of Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan in Geneva, with the support of the Republic of Finland and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
At the meeting, the possibilities and challenges of developing the Multilateral Threat Early Warning Systems (MHEWS) in the South Caucasus Region, including the creation of the “Multilateral Threats Early Warning System” (CASC-MHEWS), were discussed.
The representatives of the Hydrometeorology Department were also present on the working visit to the Republic of Finland, together with the head of the agency. During the visit, Georgian Emergency and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the Republic of Finland and the Kingdom of Sweden Irakli Khutsurauli attended the meetings held.
