Kutaisi, Georgia: The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Kakha Kakabadze, got acquainted with forest restoration measures in “Kutaisi Mukhnari” on the spot.

The marked area of the forest, where the endemic and red-wort species – the unique “Imerian oak” – meet, has been significantly damaged by illegal logging and pollution over the decades.

The National Forestry Agency of Georgia shared the glimpses of the inspection works on its official Facebook Page on Monday, November 17, 2025. The Georgian National Agency shared some details related to the Kutaisi Mukhnari, along with glimpses of the acquisition works.

During the visit, officials highlighted that the preservation of the Imerian oak requires long-term monitoring and continuous renewal efforts.

The Deputy Minister also participated in the planting campaign in “Kutaisi Oak Tree“. Students of Kutaisi International University, under the supervision of forest specialists, planted about 40 Imerian species of oak seedlings in the territory.

“Kutaisi oak forest is not only important in terms of biodiversity, but also a recreational area for local people. Accordingly, the National Forest Agency is taking measures that will promote the restoration of the forest in this area and utilize its full potential,” said Kakha Kakabadze, Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture.

The National Forest Agency has been implementing forest restoration measures in “Kutaisi Mukhnari” since 2018. In parallel with sanitary cuts, measures to promote both planting and natural renewal were carried out. Within the framework of arranging infrastructure, drainage works were carried out in the flooded area.

For today, the area of forest restoration measures includes 270 ha. Up to 9500 leafy seedlings have been planted, including Imerian oak protected by “red speck”. Perimeter is fenced; good condition of natural regeneration is visible; specialists are monitoring the area.
