The Development of the SMART patrolling system in protected areas is moving to a new stage. The process of implementation of the SMART Survey, which allows structured and regular monitoring of biodiversity, begins.
The Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia shared the glimpses of their SMART Survey on its official Facebook Page on December 10, 2025, Wednesday. The Georgian Agency also shared a small note about their patrolling works along with their glimpses.
Machakhela National Park has been determined as the pilot location of the project, where bear monitoring piloting using SMART Survey is planned at the beginning stage. International experts are actively involved in the process of training employees.
SMART patrolling has been successfully installed on Georgian protected territories for several years. The SMART patrolling and monitoring system combines data on law enforcement issues in protected areas.
The SMART Survey function significantly expands these possibilities. The SMART Survey is a biodiversity monitoring tool that allows rangers to receive accurate information about the biodiversity found in the park area by specific species. The program provides preparation of unified reports, using maps, diagrams, and other analytical tools.
The development of SMART patrols and SMART Survey is another important step towards the creation of a modern, data-based management system, which in the long term will significantly improve the quality of monitoring and management of protected areas. The implementation of a modern system in protected areas is carried out with the support of the Caucasus Nature Foundation (CNF).
