The Georgian judo team won two gold medals on the second day of the European Championship in Tbilisi. Both men’s and women’s competition was fruitful for the Georgian team. In both cases, the national anthem of Georgia was sung.
The Georgian National Olympic Committee (GNOC) shared the glimpses of the European Championship held in Tbilisi on its Official Facebook Page on April 17, 2026, Friday. The GNOC also shared a small note about the championship along with its glimpses.
The leader of the Georgian women’s team, current world champion Eter Liparteliani (-57 kg), made her way to the final. In the first match, he won against Iceland’s Elis Biora at the expense of four yukos. Italian Veronica Tonolo also defeated Yuko. In the quarterfinals, which continued until the golden point, Russian Xenia Galitskaya won with Vazar. The semifinal also continued until the golden point, where Liparteliani won a pure victory, and in the decisive match, he won with Israeli Timna Nelson Levis from Japan and celebrated the championship.
The championship was held by the most experienced member of the Georgian men’s team, winner of all three Olympic games medals, World and European champion Lasha Shavdatuashvili (-73 kg).
A Georgian judoka with a title will participate in the competition from the second round. Walter Olin defeated Finland at the expense of three warnings in the match that extended to the golden score.
In the second match, due to the unannounced Romanian opponent, the Georgian judoist automatically considered victory. Quarterfinals continued until the golden point, where the experienced Georgian defeated Akil Giakova from Kosovo with Ipon. Also, with a golden point, France defeated Jean Benjamin Gaba and got the right to compete in the final.
Shavdatuashvili had to confront the Azerbaijani Olympic, World, and European Champion Hidayat Heidarov in the gold medal match. The meeting was also crowned with Georgian victory and singing of the Georgian anthem.
