Georgia, Azerbaijan expand Long-Term Energy Cooperation

Within the framework of the visit of the Georgian government delegation to Azerbaijan, strategic cooperation agreements were signed between Georgia and Azerbaijani energy companies.

The strategic documents include the two countries’ 20-year cooperation to buy and sell electricity and transit to Turkey, as well as the continuous supply of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Georgia. The parties also agreed on loading the Georgian section of the Baku-Sufsi oil tank. Signature was held at the meeting between Tamar Ioseliani, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, and Deputy Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan Anar Akhundov, and President of Oil State Company (SOCAR) Rovshan Najafi.

At the meeting, the parties discussed the issues of cooperation between the Georgian and the Azerbaijan State Oil Company. The fruitful activities of SOCAR in Georgia in different energy fields were emphasized. Among them, attention was given to energy projects of regional importance, such as the southern gas corridor, Baku-Tbilisi-Jevan oilfield, Baku-Sofian pipeline, and others.

The parties have positively assessed the package of strategic agreements signed between the ministers of Georgia and Azerbaijan in the energy sector, aimed at deepening economic cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting emphasized the special role of Georgia and Azerbaijan in European gas supply and energy security and reaffirmed the commitment to this political course.

The meeting noted that the historic agreements signed will not only strengthen the economic ties of the two countries but also make a significant contribution to the development of the regional energy corridor and further enhance the function of Georgia as a transit country and a green energy hub.

The strategic agreements were signed by Georgia by Ekaterine Sisauri, the General Director of the Oil and Gas Corporation, Vano Zardiashvili, the General Manager of the State Electricity Market, and Tornike Kazarashvili, the CEO of the Commercial Operator of the Electricity Market, and on the Azerbaijan side, SOCAR President Rovshan Najaf and the establishment of SOCAR Midstream Operation LLC. Director Farhan Aliyev is the role model.
