The Georgian government has taken on the construction of Anaklia Deepwater Port. It should be noted that the construction of Anaklia Port is given great importance to strengthening Georgia’s transit function and, therefore, the sustainable economic development of Georgia.
The role of the Middle Corridor for connecting the West and East is growing. The Middle Corridor was formed as the shortest and most important trade-economic route between Europe and Asia, in which Georgia plays a key role. Our port infrastructure is functioning at maximum capacity today. Growth is accompanied by all kinds of burdens. In January-April 2026, load shedding increased by 21% compared to the same period of last year, and in the last 4 years there was a total increase of 46%.
Over the past year, the Government of Georgia has developed a clear vision and strategy for the further development of the country’s transport and logistics sector, which is in full line with the prospects of sustainable development of the transport infrastructure of the countries participating in the Middle Corridor.
The Georgian government will invest $ 7 billion in strategic infrastructure of the sector until 2032, which includes the construction of the Anaklia Deepwater Port, the typical renovation of the Georgian Railway and the completion of the construction of the high-speed highways.
The Georgian government’s policies, implemented reforms, and coordinated work with partner countries have led to unprecedented international interest in Anaklia Deepwater Port from both neighboring and Central Asian countries, China and the Gulf states, as well as Western companies.
From what is mentioned, it is clear that the Anaklia project has already acquired the responsibility of a strategic infrastructure project of not only regional but also international importance.
Given the increasing interest of many countries and international companies in the project, Georgia needs to develop Anaklia to establish a model that provides the state’s leading role in strategic infrastructure development, while creating a competitive environment where a number of stakeholders take into account the interests of the country and the company. Putting it into practice is possible.
In view of this task, the Government of Georgia has decided to build Anaklia Deepwater Port with the most widely approved model of the so-called “Landlord” in the world, in which the State will remain the owner of the main maritime and port infrastructure and will provide its development and management. The “Landlord” model will enable the state to develop the Port of Anaklia not only as planned before, but at the same time in partnership with several states and companies, which will create the best conditions for loading cargo to the port and thereby for its maximum effective operation.
Along with the creation of the port infrastructure, the State will provide road and railway access to Anaklia, and the necessary investments for container and cargo terminals will be made by international investors and private operators. Georgian government especially welcomes investments made in Anaklia Port from Middle Corridor participating countries – China, Central Asian countries, and Azerbaijan.
The decision is based on the main objective: with the participation of partner countries and their interests, the Port of Anaklia will be established as a center of international interests, capital and cargo convergence.
The most important decision taken by the Georgian Government will further strengthen the national interests of Georgia, create new economic opportunities, and make our country a key participant in the Middle Corridor Project.p
