Authorities detect Illegal Electric Fishing in Zugdidi

The employees of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Regional Department of the Environmental Supervision Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia revealed a violation of the law in the Zugdidi Municipality.

The employees of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Regional Department of the Environmental Supervision Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia revealed a violation of the law in the Zugdidi Municipality.

The Environmental Supervision Department of Georgia shared the details of the revealed violations on its official Facebook Page on August 12, 2026, Wednesday. The Georgian Agency also shared glimpses of the illegal use of electric fishing weapons, along with it.

According to the details shared by the Environment Department, it should be noted that a citizen illegally obtained cobra fish using electric weapons at the pond in the village of Akhal Abastumani.

Fishing with electric weapons is a criminal offense, and the materials of the fact have been sent to the relevant agency for further response.

Electric weapons also pose a threat to human life and health. The manufacture, purchase, storage, carrying, transfer, transportation, forwarding or use of electric weapons is an act punishable by law.

The fight against poaching is a priority for the Environmental Supervision Department. The Department’s crews conduct 24-hour continuous patrols throughout the country in order to prevent, suppress and detect illegal fishing and other environmental violations promptly.

In addition, an immediate response is provided to each message received on the Ministry’s hotline (153). As part of the fight against poachers, the Department, including the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Regional Department, actively uses modern technological and floating means. As a result, the fight has become even more extensive and effective. In the first 6 months of this year, 40 cases of illegal fishing have been detected in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti alone.
